For those of us that have been glued to the Commonwealth Games over the past week, rowing has been conspicuous by its absence. A mainstay of the Olympic Games, rowing hasn't been included in the Commonwealths since 1986.
The reason for rowing's omission from the Games is not entirely clear. It is perhaps because Commonwealth countries in the developing world would struggle to host a regatta that met the rigorous standards that FISA (the governing body for international rowing) require for an international regatta. Alternatively it could be that rowing's historically elitist reputation does not fit with the ethos of the Commonwealth Games.
Whatever the reason, there is optimism that rowing will return to the Commonwealth Games in 2018. However, if you can't wait until then for your fix of international rowing competition, be sure to catch the BBC coverage of the World Rowing Championships which runs August 24th - 31st.
